I recently bought a used PowerMac G5 Quad Core 2.5MHz (late 2005)

I was able to install from the DVD by connecting the PM G5 to a G4,
putting the G5 into FireWire target disk mode, and putting the DVD
into the G4's DVD drive.
I doubt that the problem is in the G5's DVD drive, because it has
not had a problem with any other DVD or CD, including booting from a
DiskWarrior DVD.
Any ideas as to the cause of the problem?
The "PowerMac G5 Quad Core 2.5MHz (late 2005)" originally came pre-
installed with OS 10.4.2:

You cannot perform direct installation of any OS lower than that, such
as your retail Tiger DVD, presumably with OS 10.4.0. My iMac G5/2.1
20-inch iSight (January 2006) is in the same situation.
