Sounds like a good plan. I doubt OS 9 is slower than OSX in network transfers 
in 
a Beige G3.

If you ever decide to revisit the issue be sure to use the cmd-V Verbose mode 
at 
boot.  Aside from all the googlely-gook you see on screen it can provide a lot 
of good info on the card in question and I think there is a way to print it out 
(from logs) if goes too fast to read. I used this method on my unsupported OSX 
Mac's to help solve a few  problems in years past. --glen
