I'm planning on installing a new optical drive in my G4 Quicksilver.
Does anyone know what drives are options that will support 16x DVD-RW
and DVD+RW that won't mess up the Powermac? Need to be IDE, btw.
Sites like OWC (macsales.com) offer fully compatible drives at great prices.
"support" is relative. Any device can be supported by the OS. But
what you're probably interested in is the ability to burn data discs
from Finder or perhaps video discs from some other app...
You didn't mention what OS or what authoring software you have, so...
In Panther and earlier, only a few drives are directly supported. A
tool such as PatchBurn can be used to create a profile that will more
fully support other drives.
In Tiger and newer, any drive can be used to read discs. For
writing, many many more drives are supported. And again, PatchBurn
can sometimes be used to fix the rest.
For drives that are not directly supported, or supported with a
profile you add, you'll need to use an authoring package that
supports them directly, eg: Toast.

Any IDE DVD+/- RW should work, I think. But that may be my PC mindset.
