Couple of ideas...

Open "Activity Monitor" (in folder Utilities), and check if any process is
hogging CPU% and/or Memory.

When this is happening, by any chance you have any web page open?
Some web pages are full of scripts and other gadgets that can slow down an
old computer like yours.

Try working with no unneeded app (especially a web browser) open, and see if
this change anything.
