A slower spinning drive should also mean the drive is less mechanically
"stressed" and - therefore - less prone to malfuction...

Good logic, but no. In my experience those eco drives gak fast.
They're less costly because they're cheap garbage, not because
they're inexpensive.
I also find them to be one of the main causes of people complaining
about performance problems.
