Yes. It has no battery and the internal backup (PRAM) battery is dead, but
it works fine when plugged in.

All bets are off - the nvram settings are inconsistent. For all we know, the processor was down-cycled. Put in a working battery. Reset the pram and nvram. Set the energy saver settings. Then retry.

There was a kernel panic when I tried to disconnect the Target disks, and
here is the log content

Not good. But still not what I asked for. Check the system.log for i/o errors, that occured during the slow transfer.
