That red light is normal.
I have NOT reset the PMU. A PMU reset always seems a drastic/risky
measure to me, but maybe no more risky than prodding and poking the
optical audio port itself.
I would reset the CUDA switch near the RAM slots on the bottom of
the logic board. Be sure to disconnect all cables before doing this
also remove PRAM battery.
