I recently made some comparisons when shopping for a new video card.
(I'm talking mostly about videogames perfomance, though)

I can't remember everything, but IIRC the R9650 was holding its ground
against the old "heavyweights" like R9800 Pro and GeForce 4 Ti.
The R9650 was slower, yes, but not very much, and with a newer architecure
(I think).
R9800 and GF 4 were "monsters", yes... but it was like ten years ago. ;-)

If you want something really better, and if you like tinkering, you should
consider getting a (flashable) PC video card, and make it for Mac.

AFAIK, the Radeon X800XT and the GeForce 7800GS are amongst the best AGP
cards you can put into a G5.
(unless you have the latest G5 with PCI-e slot)

Here's a link for a site dedicated to flashing PC cards for Mac:

and a good page with info about flashing an X800 XT x Mac:

Again, it all depends on what you do with the Mac: if you don't do gaming, I
don't know how much difference a powerful video card can make...
