What brand is it?

What version Mac OS?

What do you mean 'File nameing issues'? There shouldn't be any.

Files with 'unacceptable' names containing certain characters and such stop the transfers with a warning box

The mac OS does play just fine with NAS storage, unless the NAS itself is foo.

What I;ve been reading on line (in likely wrong places?) shows mostly folks that can't make this sort of thing work really well at all. Likwise my local repair shop says only the Drobo is a viable answer.

A while back I bought a 4-drive NAS for the mac network here and found out that between

a- the file naming issues made trying to back things up a mess
and
b- MAC OS doesn;t play nice with NAS access in general

I have a bunch of partial backup material on the NAS that needs to be transferred onto new HD's for organization and, so far, when I try that, the transfer stalls a few minutes into things and I have to reboot to get control back.
