Well, actually I didn't "kill" the software itself (someone here said that
could break some app's behaviour), I just stopped its working.

I used Cocktail (Tiger Edition - free):
http://www.maintain.se/cocktail
In the System tab/Spotlight, you can choose wether having indexing enabled
or not, for any disks you have.

The upper right icon (you mean into the menu bar, right?) is still there.
I'm just used to press "F2" (assigned to EasyFind) instead of Cmd+F.
