Well, actually I didn't "kill" the software itself (someone here said that could break some app's behaviour), I just stopped its working. I used Cocktail (Tiger Edition - free): http://www.maintain.se/cocktail In the System tab/Spotlight, you can choose wether having indexing enabled or not, for any disks you have. The upper right icon (you mean into the menu bar, right?) is still there.
