3 macs in one year. Do I have some sort of incompatible Kirlian Aura?
Allow me a short vent...
The 2007 MacBook Pro, bought exclusively as a Bentley of a location
recording system centerpieces, treated with kid gloves and not used
for anything BUT that. Woke up on a Saturday early last year refusing
to admit it had ever known anything at all about something called
"firewire", thereby making my job extremely Interesting.
Early this year, teh simple little 2008 iMac dual packed up a hard
drive. HD was replaced and while I lost email and itunes had to be
restored from backups ( and the attendant 5 copies of every song)
it's all fine.
Then last wed the studio audio system core, a stoked 2005 PPC G5 that
has been an absolute rock, woke up to stalled Blue Screen on boot.
THis was after it was physically moved for the first time in years to
be used (as a substitute for the dead MacBookPro) as a recording
location rig. after a few days back from the recording It developed
the BLUE SCREEN STALL boot problem. It would boot and run in SAFE
mode, but I have no audio devices and no sound (past boot-up mac
CHIME). I had backed it up on CCC (thank you all for that
recommendation) just before this happened
Over the last days I have fought to resurrect it. Messed up by trying
to remove odd files until I triggered the Evil Grey You Must Restart
Your Computer Boot Death Screen.
and so, having done a recent full backup, went for a full erase-
install of 10.3, then upgrade to 10.4.11 since I had the disks.
That put it back to square one: blue-screen stall or SAFE BOOT with
"no audio devices detected". I have email and access running this way
now.
I have hauled a number of Library preferences and Application Support
folders over from teh backup, this got iCal, MAIL and a few other
things of import working as before, however IO do not have the
keychain stuf working so that passwords are filing themselves in as
before. But it feels haphazard.
Beyond the minor annoyances here, I need
- a MUCh more regimental and rational approach to maintaining the
machines and their backups,
- organizing the mess of HD's here that need to be put in order.
THere are 3 GLYPH 550G carts, a bunch of WD hd's and, frankly, I feel
almost like the 90 yr old hoarder who has 58 cats living in a
townhouse filled top to bottom with 7' high sacks of newspapers and
magazines in a labyrinth of disorganization. While personal problems
are hardly the fashion here, I -have- gleaned some things from
following discussions relevant, and even teh CCC aspect, simple adn
small that it is, is a big help (time machine not being an option on
the G5 under 10.4.11) .
Books? Articles? Personal trainers?
Thanks.
