If I get it correctly, with the SATA card you installed two additional big HD drives; could it be the HDs are creating more heat, hence the fans spin
up?

Prior to installing the SATA card I had 4 hard drives of 500, 250, and two 200 GB GB drives. My 500 GB system drive failed and I decided to go the SATA route. I had no fan problem.

If it were the hard drives causing the problem then the fans would continually speed up, but the problem only occurs shortly after startup, then after a restart does not show up again for a week or two.
The ambient temperature in the room is 68º to 70º F.

Also, about two months prior to adding the SATA card I upgraded my OS from 10.4 to 10.5 but I can't remember if the problem started after that or after installing the SATA card.

I also failed to mention that I have two additional 60mm fans installed behind the CPU exhausting out the rear. My CPU temperatures in the winter stay around 121º F and in the summer usually go to about 135ºF. (no AC in the room)

I purchased my G4 in Nov 2003. It was a used machine about 6 months old. It's a great computer and I intend to keep it running as long as I can.
My wife has a new iMac so I can play with that if I need to.

Sorry about not changing the subject, an oversight on my part.
