I bought a couple of used server HD's and adapters, and am finally getting around to trying to install them in my G3 (running OS8.6)
I had a pair of 8.5G SCSI drives, and drive ID=0 started to show signs of failure. The 2nd HD, ID=2, is ok so far. The changeover is not as simple as I'd hoped (is anything ever?). I removed the failing HD - and the mac boots from the drive at ID=2, but the new HD isn't seen. I can't find good information on how to configure the jumpers, which may be the reason. There are jumpers on both the adapter and on the HD. I presume I have to set the SCSI ID on both of these (and have set it to 1). One of the HD's is this: https://www1.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/dk/3/32djmcjs.html The adapter was a Chinese import from eBay, labeled SCSI Ultra160/LVD/SE and has no components on it other than a single resister. It has jumper pins labeled: TPR DLY REM LED SNC SNC ID0 ID1 ID2 (X) (X) and it came with jumpers on the REM and one of the SNC pin pairs (shown by (X) Aside from the SCSI ID settings (which I'm guessing I need to set on both the HD and on the adapter), I don't know which of these jumpers I need. The drive spins up, but is not seen by Drive Setup (or by FWB Mounter or by Mount Everything or by the System Profiler), either with or without the other jumpers on the adapter.
