It would be way faster, but very likely it will be louder as well (MDDs are
known for being the loudest PowerMacs, I think) - unless the original fans
have been upgraded.

AFAIK, it should work run just fine.
I moved my OSX installation several times, from G3 to G4, and even from G4
to G5, and I had a little trouble just with some peripherals (I had to
reinstall drivers).
Going from G4 to G4 should be as smooth as silk.

If your dad were using OS9, though, there could be issues: OS9 (and
previous) installs machine-specific components (while OSX installs
everything it might need).
