I am currently living outside of the US and had set up my Father with a G4
Tower 500mhz dual processor machine that he has been using trouble free for
several years now. He contacted me the other day saying that the machine
does not power on at all. I walked him through several steps and I believe
that the power supply has given out. I have found another used machine just
like his that I could get for him within his area for much less than it
would cost to buy and replace the power supply on this machine, and was
planning to have him get this machine and have his computer guy swap out
his hard drive into the used machine to get him up and running quickly.
While looking at used machines, I also found a 1.25ghz Dual Processor G4
MDD machine for a bit more money and was thinking that this would be a much
faster machine for him. If we just swap out his HD from the now dead
500mhz DP (running OS 10.4.11), will it work ok in this 1.25ghz DP model
without having to do anything else? My limited experience with these
machines tells me it would, but I would prefer an expert opinion before I
send him out to buy a used machine with the hopes of quickly getting him
back up and running. He lives in a small town in AZ and his computer guy is
PC only and will not be of much help with a Mac, so I will have to help out
with the HD changes which I am sure he will have no problem doing, but if
programming is involved we may all be out of luck. Thanks to all for any
help given!
Tom
