I used DaleH and Bruce's instructions to clean off my stuff, and made sure 
the machine boots to the main partition again, then tried the instructions 
below and hit a wall.

I got to a command prompt by holding CMD-S while booting, but my keyboard 
entries didn't register at all.  Here are the last few lines before the 
prompt:

BSD root: disk0s3, major 14, minor 2
Singleuser boot -- fsck not done
Root device is mounted read-only

If you want to make modifications to files:
            /sbin/fsck -fy
            /sbin/mound -uw /

If you wish to boot the system:
            exit

:/ root#

...so I'm stuck?!?
