Hi Jesse, Well, I have never tried either one on Mac so can't really advise you there. All I can say is in terms of the Windows versions both Audacity and Goldwave have their strengths and weaknesses and that is why I tend to use both for a sound project. It really all comes down to what you want your sound editor to do.
Audacity's strengths are it is free, is cross-platform, supports a lot of different audio formats, has fairly easy to learn and use editing commands, and supports a number of basic effects like echo, phaser, wahwwah, low pass and high pass filters, etc. It will allow you to change pitch, speed, allow you to change volume, etc. In short, it is a pretty basic audio editor for far less than Goldwave, Soundforge, and so on. Its disadvantages are that it doesn't have as many special effects and lacks some other features you might get with a commercial editor. Goldwave has many of the same features listed for Audacity with the addition of more special effects to choose from, such as flanger and mechanize which Audacity doesn't have. Goldwave has a CD reader for ripping audio CDs to mp3, ogg, wav, etc. Since a lot of blind people are more familiar with Goldwave and its commands its easier to get help on what hot keys do what, or just advice in general from the community just because more people are familiar with it. Bottom line, I think Goldwave is the better product over all, but Audacity is certainly a good second if you don't want to pay the $55 or so for Goldwave. As for myself I am beginning to use Audacity more and more mainly for personal convenience. I am a Linux user for the most part, and since there is not a version of Goldwave for Linux and there is one for Audacity naturally I simply do the editing in Audacity rather then getting on a Windows system to do a quick edit here and there. So its not really a case of liking one over the other, but more of using whatever is available and serves my purpose at the time. Cheers!
