Hi Tom.
Well it is true in the Uk that terrestrial tv stopped showing Doctor who
fter the series was cancelled, one reason why I only got to see it when my
parents got Sky tv (cable is less commonly used over here), though the
explanation for that is quite simple since the Bbc in the early 1990's
weren't going to reshow something they'd just cancelled, and the other
terrestrial channels such as Itv, being Bbc's main competitors wouldn't have
been allowed anywhere near Doctor who.
As I said, games have usually involved a third party character, often not
even one of the Doctor's assistants. The only problem however, with creating
a Doctor who game is that obviously you'd still probably need! the Doctor
himself as indeed the Mainstream pc adventure games have done. Though I
suppose it might be possible to create a fan game about Dalek or cyber wars
without him, just as the Big Finish Dalek Empire and Cybermen series created
stories featuring the popular enemies without the Doctor in them.
Btw, your description of the doctor's assistants as "pretty Chicks" while
understandable from the last few series (I personally really disliked Amy
Pond), is actually incorrect. The Doctor has had a number of male assistants
over the years. Also, in the Big Finish audio dramas, which at the moment
many people pretty much considder the best current iteration of Doctor who,
the Doctor has had some very unique assistants who are anything but the
sterriotypical rather dim Londoner.
One of these for example is Evelyn Smythe, a professor of History who is
actually in hear late 40's and early 50's. It's quite natural that a
professor of history would jump at the chance of travelling in Time and
space, and it's also great to have an assistant who doesn't just need to be
rescued or get involved in snappy emotional soap opera emotional
shenanigans.
Actually the character of Evelyn has got a lot of praise from various
reviewers and she's one of my personal favourite companions, aprticularly
since she's a companion of The Sixth doctor, one of my personal favourite
encarnations.
Btw, since the Doctor who audios have been so popular, it's actually a shame
Bf couldn't be persuaded to make some sort of Doctor who audio game with the
original actors, that would be awsome! AGain, this is why having information
about audio games on the internet would be a great thing.
All the best,
Dark.
