Hi Darren.
nothing wrong with furry paws. When I was reviewing it for audiogames.net I
thought it looked a highly well designed game. The only reason why it holds
exactly zero interest for me is that frankly why would I want to have
virtual dogs when I live with a real one who I must take care of myself.
Hitting a button labeled "play" just feels flat to me as compared to going
and getting a pull toy or taking Reever outside for a run, heck why would I
want to get up at half past seven each morning, let Reever out, give her her
breakfast and then! switch on my computer to do the same for virtual dogs?
I can appreciate the good design of the game, but the subject matter just
never appeals to me the way even a pet game with random monsters like Puppet
nightmares or Monster breeder would.
I think i know what you mean about accomplishment, though for me to be
honest it's also a major facctor of seeing soemthing different and getting
something else to do. Ce is great for rewarding you not with just doing the
same thing with bigger numbers the way most games work, but with giving you
new and interesting things to do that you must work to unlock. For example,
I have just got into the expanse galaxy, which I've been heearing about ever
since I started. For the last 18 months (or at least all the time I've been
playing in the last 18 months), I've been trying to unlock the snarg, (I'm
on mission 8 so I think I've about 50 crates to go).
this is likely why online rpgs interest me more than stratogy games, as well
as the pvp issue, since yeah, you build some lumber yards and quarries to
build your house, then guess what, you build some more lumber yards and
quarries so you can have bigger numbers to build your castle and oooh, you
then get to build yet more! quarries and lumber yards to build your
fortress!
In Ce however, even with settlement construction you actually get different
things to do at each level, for example my settlement is level 2 at the
moment and I can't really do much more than research (I could add some mines
to produce resources or a factory but there's not much point).
At level 3 I get to add buildings for income, have more contracts for things
like extractors and get attacked by pirates! At level 4 there's adding
things like universities and contracts for manufacturing centers as well as
bigger versions of what I've been doing, ---- and level 6 is a new thing
entirely.
This to me is largely why i play games in the first place, to see what there
is to be done.
All that being said, I do think a single player stratogy like an extended
castaways would be awsome since it can present you with far more in the way
of random events and environmental challenges to cope with, not just
minimaxing your numbers to best affect at greater and greater amounts (and
at least with most online stratogy games hoping not to get creamed by
someone who can minimax better than you).
Beware the grue!
Dark.

hi,
yes i know games of this type do have a form of rinse and repete style of
play to some degree. i don't mind that so much if you can make a mark and
have something to show for it.
right now i'm playing furry paws. initially i completely dismissed it
because of what i thought the game was. but now i've actually started
playing it, you can slowly and surely make a real difference in the game
and people will help you just like they would in ce. it's that feeling of
accomplishment that you can get that goes way beyond what you would get
from a simple scoreboard.

Indeed Lisa, in fact you mentioning truckers reminded me of trucking sim

There is then also Mississippi (though I wasn't as keen on that one,
