Hi Josh,
Not true. Sounds alone aren't going to make a game as good as a sighted
game. For example, take the Bavasoft games. The sounds they have are
good, but the games get quite boaring after a couple of times through,
and are nowhere comperable to asighted game.
I've not seen Audio Games Maker in action yet, and can not say for sure,
but I am fairly certain you aren't going to be able to make games
comperable to sighted games with the software initially. The reason will
be limitations in the development of advanced moves, design of 3D game
levels, whatever.
For example, take a game like Tomb Raider. Especially, one of the later
games IV, V, or VI. In that game you perform allot of different moves
with Lara Croft. You can have her do backflips, rolls, safety drops,
sprint, running jumps, swing on ropes, slide down polls, climb objects,
duck, crawl, etc... In short lara Croft can do several different stunts
and moves which makes the game fun to play. All of it in true 3D space.
In Tomb Raider you can do an alt+control+up arrow to have Lara jump up
and hang from a ledge or other object to hang on. Another control+up
arrow will allow her to swing her legs up onto the ledge and she will
stand up on that ledge, etc... I'm guessing Audio Games Maker won't
allow you to create that complex of moves, but maybe it will. In either
case that kind of advanced sort of action is now becoming common place
in some sighted FPS games.
Advanced actions asside I know AGM doesn't allow for save game features.
This is too bad as a game of any real complexity requires a save game
feature in order to complete it. Again using Tomb Raider as my example
some of the puzzles are difficul to solve, and it takes time to get lara
through a specific gate, or to locate some special item she needs to
find in the game.
When AGM comes out I'll be testing it, and I'll be interested in how
close to sighted games one can get with it.
