josh, the only thing I can see as far as multi-weapons is to either
have it set up like in Grizzley Gulch wherein you buy a rifle and
never use the pistol again. In fact, the pistol and rifle have
different sound files, totally pointless in my oppinion, but whatever,
and the pistol sound file is no longer necessary.

Perhaps this interface would work, in that picking up an item called
pistol activates a trigger that changes your attack strength, hit
range, hit angle, and player attack sound, if necessary. In fact, you
could forego the item entirely and just have the trigger terminate
it's default sound when it's been collided with and then not loop.

You could start out with a couple of weapons and use keypress triggers
to do the same thing.
