It is a mud, aka multi-user dimention, an online game you connect to with a
mud client such as vip mud or mushclient.
I'm using vip mud from gma games myself, which has some nice vi specific
features and includes sapi and other screen reader support.

to turn the compass off. you use set compass. it is a toggle. and to have
the exits appear in text you would type set show-exits again it is a
toggle. the immortal staff are actually pretty open to trying to make
things accessible. My husband is a guide on there and has helped other
blind players.

Hmm. I forgot the commands to mak the map non-graphical and turn into
compus exits, though I forgot how. It is, though, indeed possible.
