Hi Jeremy.
Well good luck, ---- I'm afraid I've never been able to do that
successfully. I would however urge you to try Angband, ---- just to see the
list utilities and curser navigation features which imho make it so
accessible.
A member of the dev team did indicate he'd look into adding the access
features I requested, ---- but it would be a version or two down the
line, --- so we'll have to see what happens.
Beware the grue!
Dark.

Thanks Dark,
Unfortunately, I don't have a Braille Display so was just relying on
cursor movement commands. So far, I have done reasonably well, but it is
really interesting to hear how others play.
Thanks for the note about Angband.
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy.
I've personally never had much luck with ascii games at all, ---- owing
to my lack of a braille display.
I have however been very impressed with Angband found at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angband_(video_game) for some great in built
access features, such as ability to get a list of all on screen monsters
and objects, ability to have a moveable curser which works like a curser
in a screen reader and can flip betwene interesting objects and monsters
on screen, --- and the character of course.
I'd be very interested to know if these features existed in Nethack, ----
sinse other than the highlighter curser, I couldn't find anything, which
has been another contributing factor to me having difficulties with the
game.
Currently I play angband with a combination of my remaining site, an easy
visibility graphical tile set, hal, and these access features, ---- but I
have been in discussion with the developer about adding more access
features to the game to allow it to be playable entirely by commands
alone.
Such features I've suggested include a directional look command, and a
basic distance factor expressed as coordinates to tell you the distance
betwene your character and the object highlighted by Anband's highlight
box.
Hopefully we'll see these in a future release of Angband, ---- and in the
mean time, sinse Angband does I believe just use the standard ascii, ----
I'd recommend it to people who might ahve braille displays due to it's
great access features.
Oh btw, if Angband can have these features added, they could also be
added into angband innumerable varients, ---- some of which are full rpg
games with quests, many environments etc, ---- which could then be
accessible too.
All the best,
Dark.

Subject: [Audyssey] Playing Nethack, either the DOS or Windows Version
with Jaws, any tips?
Hello folks,
With all the testing and playing I have been doing with Entombed
recently, I thought it would be fun to check out some of the
"Rogue-like" games out there. I am referring to NetHack in this
message.
I downloaded the DOS and Windows versions from Nethack.org. I know that
Michael has written an access.nh file which should be copied to the
defaults.nh file if one is playing the DOS version. I did also see that
there is no equivalent access file for the windows port, but after
looking at the various settings, I am sure that the same changes can be
made.
I decided to give the DOS version a go. I realize from other
discussions on this list that some listers have problems running
programs in DOS windows. Some of you have complained about the slowness
in which a DOS program runs on things like windows xp. I am happy to
say, I somehow don't have that problem, and I am able to play EamonDX
and Fallthru without any real lag of time, and use Jaws version 10 or 11
for reading the screen in the DOS window.
Ok, now onto my question for some of you real experienced NetHack
players out there. Other than turning all punctuation on, and using the
main jaws cursor commands, are there any other configurations I need to
make? I am still getting used to what all those ascii symbols on the
screen stand for, and have been using the slash command and reading the
manual as much as I can.
I'm pretty sure that it will just take some stumbling around, but I
figured I would consult with any experienced netHack player, to see if
they found other settings that worked better than those in the access.nh
file, or other useful Jaws commands
If nobody has anything else to add, then I will just keep on poking
around here and see how far I get. grin
