Yup, you're right. Enter allows you to insert a key into the bonus booth.
The ghosts take away resources, such as airtime, points and strength, while
the growling monsters will kill you instantly.
Every time you pick up a coin, the monster/monsters will move faster.
And then there's the curse which I will leave up to you to find out about.

well when you are at the booth (you hear a bell, much higher than the one
meaning you picked up a key) you can hit enter to make, ur, something,
happen. What happens is purely random
Some more help.
-Coin sounds mean coins. if you hear a constant jingling noise like
something falling that's a key. There is also another sound for a key
which seems to be in stereo and sounds like a few large keys jingling. a
low bell means you've picked a key up.
Ghosts. Well, when you hear someone singing/what ever that is, a ghost
will show up. If you hear something like a ruff growl kind of like a lion,
those ghosts need to be avoided as good as possible, because they will
kill you. If you hear another kind of growl which is a cross between an
elephant or a dinosaur (best way I can describe it), those willmake you
drop coins and may possibly warp you to another part of the river. When
you're avoiding don't go left or right. they're too fast if you move that
way and will most likely get you. I find moving up or down is a better
strategy and if you surface (your character will gasp and splash a little)
no ghost can harm you so then you can move away left/right.
