Hi Tom.

I know just what you mean about big cutout headphones.

The ones I use for my desktop are a pare of fairly extreme sanheisar ones which actually cost close to 200 pounds, ---- about 300 dollars.

the reason? The sound quality on them is exceptional, whatever you plug them into. Standard headphones with a gold jack, just amazingly good ones.

Obviously though, i don't hike around the country 9much less the world), with those, so I bought a set of sanheisar eerbuds, which are far smaller, but stil have great sound quality.

I'll look into a usb headset for the time being, but this has brought home to me that my laptop is probably getting on a bit.

While I do have a perfectly good desktop, I am aware I need my laptop for many things, traveling in cars, trains boats and planes, sitting outside cafes, points when (like now), I'm staying with my parents for long periods, (especially sinse it's got all my phd work on it), tabletop rp each weak pluss having my scripts and music available at rehearsals of any productions I'm doing.

For all these reasons, I really can't afford to be without one.

Therefore, while I'll see about a usb solution for the short term, I think my eventual plan will be to buy a new laptop.

I'll go with toshiba again, sinse I find them most useful, pluss I think they can stil provide me with an xp machine.

Any suggestions on good makes of soundcard would be appreciated.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Hi Dark,

Well, I happen to own a set of USB headphones and am quite happy with
them. They have sort of a big end with a USB port that plugs into my
laptop and is detected as a secondary sound device meaning I can have
separate settings for the headset and my actual sound card. What I
like about the set I have is they are the big headphones that covers
your ears and cancel out a lot of background noise which comes in
handy for games. Then, they have a boom microphone that folds down in
front of my face so I can use Dragon Naturally Speaking for dictation,
place web calls, do podcasts, or whatever. the Microphone is extremely
clear with very little background noise. The only complaint I have
with them is I can only use them with Windows. Linux doesn't recognise
them. So I'd say instead of forking out the cash for a new laptop try
a set of the USB headsets.

Cheers!
