I just did a couple of minutes on the offline map with an earplug in one ear as a sort of rudimentary simulation, and damn it's hard!
Raising the zombie footstep volume using J to increase and Shift-J to decrease did help quite a bit, so definitely give that a go. Took me a while to get used to the change in relationship between the new volume and distance of zombie, but after a few kills I didn't seem to be wasting ammo by starting to pick off zombies while they were a long way off. I wonder whether the radar could be tweaked to omit a different chirp when it locks onto zombies? Some thought would need to go into the feature, I mean it's not like you could say "it makes this sound when it picks up on something that's alive" with a zombie is it. An email I just sent out to Aprone about growl sounds adjusting correctly mid sound should help you out with the dogs if he can fix it.
