I'd love to start that, accept that with mage as my 5th class it'll take a good while to get the skills up for them, hence my suggestion of making them useable elsewhere, indeed I'd love to see the brotherhood of alchemy suggestion come into the game, ie, a group who would trade spell castings, potions, scrolls or other useful stuff for spell components.

Spell components are very useful for brewing potions etc. That's pretty fun and gives quite a bit of xp when you get good at it.

The shopkeeper improvements are twofold:  improving the quality of the
stuff they can stock, and having more inventory turnover.  These are
basically tool changes, allowing us as builders to handle shopkeepers
more effectively, so you'll probably only notice a difference on a
handful of shopkeepers at first.

Regarding selling more stuff to shopkeepers, I've been thinking about
ways to improve it, but there are some difficult constraints I have to
think really hard about.
