If you have a scroll you can simply use the command recite so if it is an scroll of identify and you want to use it on a staff type the command recite scroll staff. As for getting whooped you will get better. A good tip is to get your speech as fast as you can possibly get it to keep on top of the action and just practice will tell you when to fight and when to flee. It is all good fun.
