Another important tactic for mages is to unleash a lot of power
quickly and make your targets dead fast. The faster your enemy dies,
the less time they have to injure you.

Two things I almost always recommend for primary class mages are the
shocking hands and burning grasp spells. These are charge spells, so
you cast them on yourself, and when you're hit (or sometimes when you
get hit), they discharge into the enemy. Even though they're low
level, their power goes up a lot with level, and they do a lot of
damage for not a lot of mana. You have to sacrifice a held item or
shield (never sacrifice your weapon) in order for them to discharge,
but in my opinion, it's totally worth it. Make sure to read the help
pages on them.
