I just wanted to close out this item, by saying that I was
able to use PHP to get the XML stream from gmetad and
extract what I was looking for.

and that is why if you want to poll string metrics generated through gmetric 
then getting the data from the gmetad XML (tcp connection into port 8651 most 
of the time) will be probably better (they will be identified as
SOURCE="gmetric")
