I didn't have to, I believe they're multicasting. If that had been
the problem, then gmetad wouldn't have been updating the RRDs for all
the hosts, would it? (regardless of cluster name)

Upgrading gmond on one of the old boxes caused a huge problem and I
immediately downgraded it again. Many metrics suddenly turned into
nonsense. I posted about that to this list separately.

Upgrading the existing gmetad to something that may or may not work
makes it likely that I would lose data. The way I'm doing it now, I
still have the old gmetad running and collecting data and can keep
retrying the new one until it works correctly.

Actually, I found the problem, and it turned out not to be the
gmetad.conf file. It turned out to be some of the gmond.conf files on
other hosts: Some of them did in fact have name = "unspecified.

So:
most hosts have name = "OurCluster" in gmond.conf
several hosts have name = "unspecified" in gmond.conf
old gmetad puts *all* hosts in OurCluster
new gmetad puts *all* hosts in unspecified

I changed two of the gmond.conf files from unspecified to OurCluster,
restarted their gmonds, and restarted the new gmetad. That fixed it.

Now:
most hosts have name = "OurCluster" in gmond.conf
several hosts have name = "unspecified" in gmond.conf
   (but two fewer than before)
old gmetad puts *all* hosts in OurCluster
new gmetad puts *all* hosts in OurCluster

I know I should go and fix the few remaining flawed gmond.conf files,
but I also wonder: how does this make any sense?
How does gmetad decide which cluster to put all the hosts in?
