Per the 3.1.0 release notes:
------------------------------------------
Upgrading from 3.0

The 3.0 and 3.1 versions of ganglia are only compatible at the XML
layer, and so you can't mix them in the same cluster (as defined by the
multicast address or unicast collector used).
A 3.1 gmetad will be able to collect data from either version (both
gmond or gmetad) and so it will be better if you plan your migration in
a cluster by cluster basis and starting from the top of your gmetad
hierarchy (if you have one) recursively as described by the following
steps:

   1. upgrade your head gmetad/frontend (or your only gmetad if not
using a hierarchy)
   2. upgrade each one of the sources one cluster at a time (will
include upgrading a leaf gmetad if using a hierarchy)
------------------------------------------

Just to confirm:

Do the statements above imply that you can upgrade the gmetad's to
3.1.X, and still have them safely polling/pulling data from 3.0 gmond's?
(but cannot mix 3.1.x and 3.0 versions of gmond's on the same cluster?)

Subject: Re: [Ganglia-general] REPOST: 3.1.1 and 3.0.X compatibility?

Hi Kristy,

Ganglia versions 3.0.x & 3.1.x are only compatible at the XML/gmetad
level, not at the gmond udp/multicast metric level. See the release
notes for version 3.1.0 for more information:

http://ganglia.wiki.sourceforge.net/ganglia_release_notes

Perhaps this important note should be kept in the release notes for all
3.1.x versions, just in case someone skips over 3.1.0 when upgrading.
