Peter, I don't disagree with you that a unified API which compensated for the differences in the underlying implementations would be great. I just don't think it would be a good use of time, because the Lisp community has a hard enough time as it is doing the little things like providing reliably installable libraries, let alone solving Big Problems. I suspect this unified API would take quite a while to build. Better to spend any available time on making one implementation easy to install, easy to work with and easy to rely on.
