The problem was entirely with gs7.00
I upgraded A's box to 7.03 and the 1.8Mb .eps file loads in seconds.
I converted it to .jpg with -quality 75 and cut it down to 50Kb, and
that worked perfectly as well.
I would suggest blacklisting 7.00
