I came across this video when browsing for gasifiers.
In german language, people also call downdraft logburners gasifiers, which in 
many ways is right.

The Windhager retort is a true TLUD.

The remarcable idea in this one is the double bottom sluice.
Whether it makes charcoal or not sure is only a matter of discarding earlier or 
later and of the distance between the 2 discs.
(Shure a gas analyzer can tell us when it's time to let the charbed drop.)

I would air cool them, though. I have a lot of bad experience with long term 
warping of hot metal plates.

I like the idea.
