The gasifiers that I know of in Asia have been mostly at rice mills and run
only during harvest when diesel prices are high. They are often very heavy
polluters.

It will be interesting to see what you find in Germany. There are many
gasifiers in Europe in the 40 kWe/100 kW thermal range. Probably 1,000
gasifiers have been sold, just counting Spanner and Entrade. Add Volter in
Finland, and the Italian models. I have read operating reports that show
systems running 7,500 hour or more per year in Europe.

Hi Tom,

In which community did what gasifier fail?

Here a list of Chinese suppliers;

Than there is this North American munufacturer;

Just this morning I started to do some research how many MW on electricity are
produced in Germany by wood gasification. It may will take a few days till I
will get some answers.

Sincerely,

Werner Rhein

Werner,

The last review presentation that I saw on Chinese gasification was several
years ago. I heard that several of the village biomass gasification projects
had failed. If they are productive it would be good to learn about their
progress. Who are some Chinese suppliers that you would recommend looking at?

Thanks

Leland,

have you looked into what China is producing on Biomass Gasification units?

They grabbed the ball and run with it. Their products are the most advanced and
economical I can find on this earth.

Just Google it.

The C. E. C. is asking for public comment on their proposal to take forest
biomass and convert to Replacement Natural Gas as a way of reducing the cost of
cleaning up the forests to reduce fire intensity. This could use gasification,
but there are some assumptions which in working with the long pursuit of the
United States Forest Service and other agencies prevent a technologically
advanced process from happening and has been studied for decades.

The USFS which has most of it's administrative offices here in Albuquerque
had developed an interest in synthetic chemicals because of my bringing it to
their attention. Their employee became the Regional and somewhat National
Biomass Energy expert and was involved in the Range Fuels biomass to
ethanol/methanol project which was a $328 mm failure and set back gasification
and synthetic chemicals business, and the renewable fuels industry along with
damaging the petroleum industry for not being able to mix non-food based
produced alcohol into the gasoline supply. The US EPA and DOE both saw that the
Range Fuels plant would produce so much alcohol that assuming it would work,
created regulations requiring it's usage in gasoline, then when it failed, the
oil companies were still required to do so, and were penalized some $9 mm/year
for not doing so, and they went to court to stop the insanity and at the last I
heard, the court agreed with the DoE. It may have been reversed on appeal.

It is doubtful if this approach will work because:

1. Most gasification based synthetic chemical plants are too expensive
because of the lack of innovation in their processes, power distribution and
control architecture, and a list of other archaic processes they have used
without innovation:

2. No one has a good handle on gas cooling and cleaning which has been shown
to be simple and effective but not incorporated into the industry.

3. Water treatment is expensive and even the best either continue to dump
the water into prime movers like engines shortening their lifetime or reducing
the power density of the engine, or into tanks that have to be drained and
disposed of in landfills or other unacceptable methods.

4. The facility needs to be semi-mobile because of the cost of transport of
harvested biomass beyond a certain radius increases the feed cost excessively.
A pipeline quality gas supply implies a fixed facility unless converted to LNG
or CNG which are typically expensive.

5. Catalyst development has allowed for improved to the point where instead
of a 30% diesel MW product from a Fischer-Tropsch catalyst, newer ones can
produce 80% diesel MW product, significantly reducing the cost of upgrading to
commercially acceptable diesel fuel. Other products can also be produced
including chemicals that are not subject to the wild fluctuations in pricing as
the petroleum recent changes have shown, but are stable over a long period
making financial commitments much more secure about investing.

The two synthetic chemical gasification plants which are reportedly working
do not incorporate these technologies and are hugely expensive.

After watching the continuous stream of failures in the gasification
industry, it is a wonder there is even anyone still working in it as there is
vast opportunity for it's exciting involvement in major operations, but the
clinging to the past processes is a sure recipe for failure.

Sincerely,

Leland T. Taylor

My HVAC education was recently improved regarding heat storage. For decades, I
have been waiting for a system using glauber's salt, but it turns out to be
unstable as well as otherwise problematic. However, paraffin candle wax also
has a high heat of fusion in the right temperature range. I might build a
water tank filled with sealed tubes containing wax.
