Derek,

My partner and I in Chip Energy make updraft gasifiers. Our current size is compatible with your heat requirements, and we have used cherry pits in the past. But not wet ones, so there are additional factors to consider.

Yes, updraft could be a solid solution for your situation. Your wet pits will mean much water vapor (steam) coming off with the gases. I would like to discuss this with you.

I am currently in Brazil, but return tomorrow. On Saturday you could phone me at 309-452-7072 or try on Skype at paultlud

If you are in the USA and with cherry pits, you are probably in western Michigan lower penninsula. That would put you close to Chip Energy in Goodfield, Illinois (east of Peoria on I-74).

Also you might want to attend the "International Bioenergy Days" in Rockford, Illinois on 26 - 29 September (next week). Chip Energy is installing one of its systems there for the municipality, and will be conducting demonstrations.

NOTE: This IBED meeting is quite large but not widely announced. Joint USA and Sweden event, now in its 4th or 5th year. Maybe others will also attend.

I already heat my house with dried cherry pits in a modified pellet boiler.
The trouble is that drying the pits takes a lot of energy and time. If I
am going to heat my greenhouse with them, I will need to dry in excess of
100 tons. If I can burn them wet I will save time and energy.

I have been trying to think of a way to dry the pits in the hopper as they
approach the combustion area and this is where the idea of an updraft
gasifier came to mind.

How would you envision a sidestream of the burner drying the pits?

Any further thoughts?

 Derek,

gasification is great for certain puposes, but in your case I think that a
simple burner will do and it is far less complicated.
Almost any pellet burner will do but you should dry your pits first.
This can be done naturally (air) or with a sidestream of the burner.
There are many pellet burners around.

A very, very simple system is here :

They work !

I have a large supply of wet cherry pits and I want to burn them to
produce
hot water for heating my greenhouse.

I have a 200,000BTU natural gas boiler I would like to run 24/7. The hot
water would enter a large storage tank for immediate or later use.

My thought was to make an updraft top loading gasifier. The hope being
that
this would dry the pits sufficiently for burning. I would run the
producer
gas through a rad to remove as much moisture as possible and then pump the
dry gas into the boiler.

I understand that an updraft style gasifier will not crack the tars. Will
this require frequent cleaning of the boiler? Reduce efficiency?

I understand the basic principles involved, but would love some input
before
I start chopping and welding.
