Florida football coach Urban Meyer reprimands Jeremy Fowler, Orlando
Sentinel sports writer, on the practice field on Wednesday.

Florida football coach Urban Meyer passionately came to the defense of one
of his players Wednesday, stamping a somewhat surreal exclamation point on
what had been a routine spring practice.

Angered over a quote attributed to wide receiver Deonte Thompson that Meyer
felt was taken out of context in an Orlando Sentinel blog, Meyer called out
Sentinel UF football beat writer Jeremy Fowler in a heated exchange after
practice.

"You'll be out of practice. ... you understand that? ... if you do that
again," Meyer said as he pointed at Fowler. "I told you (the media) five
years ago: Don't mess with our players. Don't do it. You did it.

"You do it one more time and the Orlando Sentinel's not welcome here ever
again. Is that clear? It's yes or no."

A stunned Fowler replied: "Urban, come on. Don't make any threats. That's
fine. I'll play by the rules. ... I'll play by the rules, but all I was
doing is quoting the guy. I don't think I was the only one."

Meyer quickly fired back: "You're a bad guy, man. You're a bad guy."

As Meyer started to walk away, Fowler said, "Thanks, Urban. I appreciate
that."

Meyer turned around and then pointed at Fowler, and said: "If it was my son,
we'd be going at it right now."

The exchange occurred in front of about a dozen members of the media,
including one television reporter with a camera and one newspaper
photographer.

After Monday's practice, Thompson said he was looking forward to catching
passes from junior quarterback John Brantley, whom he described as a "real"
quarterback. Most of the writers present took Thompson's comment to mean
that Brantley was a more traditional quarterback in terms of passing the
ball.

Here is part of what Fowler wrote:

"For all <http://www.gainesville.com/section/TOPIC0102/> Tim Tebow's
accomplishments, he didn't exactly spread the ball around during his final
year in Gainesville. Senior wide receiver Riley Cooper and tight end Aaron
Hernandez accounted for almost 50 percent of the passing offense.

'You never know with Tim,' Thompson said. 'You can bolt, you think he's
running but he'll come up and pass it to you. You just have to be ready at
all times. With Brantley, everything's with rhythm, time. You know what I
mean, a real quarterback.' "

Meyer's reaction Wednesday may have been triggered by a headline on a later
Sentinel blog by columnist Mike Bianchi. The headline said: "Tim Tebow
blasphemy? Will UF receiver have to repent after apparent diss of Tim
Tebow."

Seeing the Sentinel blogs, the national media swooped down on the story, and
Thompson's quote was taken out of context in numerous reports. The junior
from Belle Glade was held up to ridicule on numerous Web sites across the
country for his remarks.

According to UF sources, Thompson was distraught over the backlash.

Because the story mushroomed the way it did, UF did not make players or
coaches available after Wednesday's practice.

But coming off the practice field, a passionate Meyer did not pass up the
opportunity to defend one of his players.
