I am not sure you are being fair to Charlie Pell. You have to remember the time and context. Charlie Pell did what most all coaches did back then. He had the misfortune of having the NCAA decide that college sports needed to be cleaned up and Pell and Florida was made an example. I know first had that players were paid under Dickey. I say the "paydays" in the mail on Monday mornings after gameday. Bear Bryant, Barry Switzer, Fred Akers, and most all others did at least as much as Charlie Pell.
