If you have an Android phone, there is an app called FoxFi which turns your
phone's internet connection into a WIFI hotspot.  It works great.  Only caveat
is you need a good data plan.  I use mine all the time for my laptop, iPad,
etc...

Thank you Stephen, Jerry and Troy, for your information and suggestions.
I am mainly concerned about the monthly bill, but I like the idea that you
could just buy a month here and there rather than having a contract.
We have Verizon for our cell phones and they have these "share everything"
plans, but that looks more expensive to me than having a separate iPad plan.

I also have an ipad, and love it, though I use android for phone, and pc for
everything else.  The ipad just works.  Also a note, if you purchase the cell
version of the ipad, even if you do not activate it, you get a built in gps
chip.  If you purchase the wifi version, it has no gps and you will have to add
one to it.  You always have the option of only buying a month here or there for
the cell service, only when needed.  There is no contract on an ipad account.
I recommend getting a cell version, as the gps on ipad is great.  I use the
garmin ap, though there are several free ones (waze and others) that are great
also.  The nice thing about the garmin is the ability to not have internet when
traveling for maps.
