Rob, What 3COM NICs were you using? There have been reports of problems like what you describe with 3C509 (not 3C905!) NICs.
The only other time I've seen something like this was with a GB-100 (not GB-1000!) unit that had token ring cards. When we added a bridge to the network and changed to Ethernet cards, the problem went away.
