I surely can't get my GB lite to do anything except that - and ping itself, of course.
I have boxen at 192.168.0.1, 5, 7, and 10. I am configuring the GB to be 192.168.0.2. The local IP number is 0.0.0.0 and my remote IP number is one that I get from my ISP. I am using DHCP for the external network anyway. The other boxen all have 192.168.0.2 as the gateway. It pings itself, but recognizes no other hosts -- and nothing recognizes it. If this machine boots without the floppy disk, it is a Win95 machine that happily becomes 192.168.0.2. So what is going on here? I've pretty much torn my hair out. --- When in doubt, just be yourself. And if that fails, su root.
