Nope, we needed to do more, and wanted the customized bounce
message, so that ruled it out. We also wanted the ability to store to disk
in case the main server went down... Our old mail system was a tad
unreliable, which is largely why it's our *old* mail system... ;-)

Haven't really audited average total inbound... We've got around
150 users and our box is more than enough by far. The load average on the
thing is 0.2 over the past year, but there's massive room for improvement
there. I'm cycling all the stuff through perl/procmail, but spamassassin
has a c version/daemon which would use massively less overhead. I just
didn't see any reason to bother with our l/a so low. And there's more
horsepower available too; 850mhz PIII is pretty mid grade but more than
plenty for our box, even without any tuning at all. A little tuning and a
top end box (or an SMP system) would do wonders for capability. I suppose
the easiest way to test would be to hack together a quick one and plug it
in for a few minutes to see what happens... The Procmail Sanitizer page
has some good instructions for setting up a sendmail relay, the procmail
side is probably similar to what qmail would need... We're only dealing
with inbound, the GB passes port 25 off to the relay, which then dumps it
to the main mailserver, outbound stuff is unhindered. Santizer can take
care of outbound too but I didn't see any particular value add.

I'm a qmail man myself, but I'm using the GB proxy, so I can't customize
unless
I host the zones locally and edit the TXT records -- which I just started
experimenting with yesterday. So far, my message says "Send your spam
elsewhere" -- I'm still too chicken to put my phone number in there. :)

So you're not using the GB proxy at all then?

Yup, I'm using SpamAssassin and bmf myself. I don't have the horsepower to
enable them across the board though. How many inbound emails does your
server
handle in a day?
