What does not work specifically in rosetta is using darwin-xtools for the build, but this is not specific to, or related to, gcc: for w/e reason their ld and ranlib do not work correctly under rosetta. (On 10.6.8 ppc natively darwin-xtools work fine, and I use them by default with everything, including gcc builds.)
