Folks, I have prepared a GDAL/OGR 1.6.0 release candidate, posted at:

Depending on immediate feedback, I will call for a PSC vote promoting this as a final release on Monday (which would take till Wendesday to complete). I would add that I have also created a 1.6 branch in subversion, and trunk is now open for GDAL/OGR 1.7 development. Bug fixes should now be considered for the 1.6 and 1.5 branches.
