Thought I'd post this bit of info from this article:

actually noted this back in July). Apparently, Google plans to push ahead
with full
HTML5 support rather than rely on Gears, at least on the Mac."
So it looks like Google is switching to HTML5 rather than gears for present
and
future mac development, hence the delay.
