First thing it will not slow down your WIFI... It is happened because your gear application load data for ofline purpose that is more important. Check out your wan connection speed. It will remain same. For google gears one thing is required that is all data must be stord in your local machine so the web application is need to store your all data of that application locally. So you might face this problem.
