I don't know, while you may be right in your case, I do think that Gears is having a much harder time with multiple tabs, but I suspect this might be Safari 4. I think the Preview Fetcher slows down the application's responsiveness, especially when opening several tabs at once and Top Sites.
Hopefully Apple will work this out. I wish they would talk to the Google people and work on building Gears in to Safari in a supported fashion (with a more transparent install/uninstall/storage system). These are 2 crucial portions of my life (offline email & web browser) and I would love if the companies responsible worked together a bit better.
