Initially the grass is living off stored food from the seed.  Grasses are
specialized for full sun.  Their initial program is to use the stored 
nutrients to grow fast enough to compete with other grasses and get into 
the light.  Under terrarium lighting they consume sugars faster than they 
can photosynthesize new ones, so they soon go bankrupt and die.
