Hello,
There was an article in Sauria back in 1991 by a couple in Germany
that used sod in sungazer (and other Cordylid) cages. They replaced it
every four or five months as part of cleaning and because the lizards
would wear paths into it, killing the grass. The lighting, it seems, wasn't an
issue since Cordylus sp. have high light requirements (similar to
Uromastyx sp.). They would also place sod in desert vivaria, not water
it, and let it die. The resulting mat of dead grass, they found, was
preferred by the lizards over sand as it provided more hide spots and
better traction. It would seem that something like this would be
useful for geckos that live in grassy areas, like Diplodactylus
elderi, D. jeanae, and D. taeniatus.
